myMADRE: In Israel, Miscegenation Equals Rape
"In the US, anti-miscegenation laws were on the books until 1967, when the Supreme Court declared them unconstitutional. That was the same year that Israel began its occupation of Sabbar Kashur’s home in East Jerusalem. Since then, Israelis have fine-tuned their own obsession with racial purity. Only they like to call it “national purity,” since Jewish privilege in Israel depends on maintaining the Jewish character of the state. In fact, race-mixing is perceived as such a threat that more than half of all Israeli Jews agree that Jewish-Arab intermarriage is a form of treason. "

John Lydon's rotten politics | David Cronin | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
Once upon a time, a few of us Brown Folks were into punk. Given our first-hand encounters with the racist, sexist, and politically reactionary tendencies of many in the punk scene, it's not surprising that Johnny Rotten would show such hatred and contempt for Palestinians.

Fibi Netanyahu - by Liel Leibovitz > Tablet Magazine - A New Read on Jewish Life
"A newly revealed tape of Netanyahu in 2001, being interviewed while he thinks the cameras are off, shows him in a radically different light. In it, Netanyahu dismisses American foreign policy as easy to maneuver, boasts of having derailed the Oslo accords with political trickery, and suggests that the only way to deal with the Palestinians is to “beat them up, not once but repeatedly, beat them up so it hurts so badly, until it’s unbearable” (all translations are mine)"

Al-Ahram Weekly | Culture | The saint sings
"How has the atmosphere of mawlids changed recently? "Mawlids changed very much in last decades, mainly through urbanisation, electricity and the spread of Salafi movements. Electricity has changed the style and size because loudspeakers have made it possible to gather large audiences, which would have been unthinkable in the past. Contemporary urban planning is also often very much at odds with mawlids which are by nature open to all kinds of activities and do not fit into Egyptian urban planners' ideas of neatly differentiated urban space. The spread of Salafi movements, with its strict refusal of ecstatic spirituality, unbounded joy, and veneration of saints, has made many Egyptians doubtful about the religious foundations of mawlids. This has slowly turned those feasts from a central part of people's social and religious lives into the occupation of a mystically dedicated minority". "

Kevan Harris, "Iranian Sociology and Its Discontents"
"... many of the problems that Iranian sociologists noted about the state of their discipline in the country -- a reliance on quantification of basic indicators instead of qualitative and critical analysis, a faddish and uncritical importation of the Western social science of the day, and an under-institutionalized training system -- are not Iranian problems per se. They are large structural problems within knowledge production in the global South. "

‘Brown Man’s Burden’ of 1899 was prescient
"Every once in a while, I return to Henry Labouchère's poem, 'The Brown Man's Burden.' It was written in 1899 and a response to another, much more famous poem. To read it with the conflict of the last seventy or eighty years in mind (and for that matter, the Second Iraq War) is an interesting experience. An anti-colonial piece, it is eerily prophetic of the shape that arguments and justifications put forth by Zionists have taken."

The impact of polygamy in Malaysia | The Nut Graph
"A landmark study on polygamy in Malaysia has cast doubt on whether husbands in polygamous marriages are able to treat their wives and children equally as intoned by the Quran. The study, conducted by Sisters in Islam in collaboration with academics from several local universities, found that while almost 80% of husbands interviewed said they could be fair, their wives disagreed."

Female Imams Blaze Trail Amid China's Muslims : NPR
"Female imams sometimes earn as little as $40 a month, one-third of what can be earned in other jobs. Younger women need to earn more to support their families. And so it appears the future of female imams in China is threatened — not by the state, not by resistance from inside Islam, but by the forces of market economics. "

LENIN'S TOMB: Racist patriarchy in Israel
"Are you getting it yet? Sex with an Arab constitutes a violation of the sanctity of body and soul - an "unbearable price". This is not a freakish opinion in Israeli society. For example, half of Israeli Jews believe intermarriage between Arabs and Jews is equivalent to national treason (that demographic 'timebomb', you see). Some are determined to enforce this sexual separation through violence or policy. Gangs of men in a Jerusalem neighbourhood roam around, behaving as a de facto vice and virtue squad, to 'protect' young Jewish girls from Arabs. One local authority has set up a squad of counsellors and psychiatrists to 'rescue' Jewish girls who are dating Arabs. Hostility to inter-marriage and cross-ethnic dating pervades Zionist culture, and is reproduced at structural and institutional levels from the cradle to the grave."

Susan Muaddi Darraj, "Jordan Crossings"
"The unique problem of Jordan is that it was a nation that cobbled together several different groups (including various Bedouin tribes, Circassians, Turks, Kurds, Armenians, and Chechens -- and later Palestinians) whom it called upon to be "citizens" of the British-backed new nation; the nation needed to create a Jordanian identity and then convince or coerce these groups to adopt it."

On Being Exotic « .rioters bloc
"It’s even worse if a man describes a woman as exotic, because the oft sexual overtones just reek of the fetishisation of women of colour. Exoticism and eroticism thus become intertwined; difference itself becomes fetishised. Such a mindset is as old as colonialism; at the same time that non-white people were denigrated and deplored, they were also watched with a ghastly fascination and curiosity. Their sexuality was obsessed over and chased while simultaneously being described as disgusting, filthy, and animal."

The Baha'is of Ivel: Undaunted spirit
"Following the demolition of Baha'i homes in the Iranian village of Ivel – reported last week – there is another story that must also be told: that of sympathetic villagers who have commiserated with their Baha'i neighbors over the injustices they have been forced to endure. It is also the story of an undaunted spirit and a commitment to social good that continues to enable the Baha'is to transcend their prolonged persecution and be active participants in the social and economic development of their village. Qantara.de - Pioneer of Progressive Interpretations of the Koran
"Abu Zayd explained it thus: "We comprehend the text of the Koran as a cultural product in its historical genesis and, at the same time, as the generator of a new culture in history. However, the generation of a culture through the text only happens via the reception of the text of the Koran by the Muslims, who, for their part, are reliant on their own perspectives and attitudes. If we understand this, we can conclude that this culture, which the Muslims themselves created, is a culture related to a certain time that we can critically analyse and understand." "

Your Complete Guide To Bad Burqa Puns
"Plays on words that seemed clever in 1996 (or rather, in colonial discourse from 1959) have become even more trite and cringeworthy after years of headline-grabbing headscarf-ban debates and "encounters" with women in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the sub-par puns don't stop, and some would make even Carrie Bradshaw roll her eyes (we acknowledge our own lame contributions to this canon). As someone who wore the "veil" for twelve years, I've endured their unpunny ubiquity in all their various forms and it gets less and less amusing. But it doesn't take years of wearing the hijab to see just how bad and pervasive "the bad veil pun" really is."

Princess Hijab's 'veiling art' - Europe - Al Jazeera English
"A graffiti artist in Paris has been going around the city incognito late at night and painting face veils over models displayed in posters and billboards. The woman, who calls herself "Princess Hijab", says the so-called "hijab-ising" of the models is just art and not a religious statement. Al Jazeera followed her one night."
