  Interesting discussion on the upcoming Egyptian elections between a Cairo Uni professor, some NDP tool, and Hossam el-Hamalawy. ElBaradei offers a breath of fresh air to a politically-stagnant Egypt, and I (Hoda) find some of his views rather impressive for a mainstream figure (his calls for a new constitution, an end to emergency laws, recognition of Coptic and Baha'i rights, his stance against a US/Israeli attack on Iran)... but given that he hasn't unveiled an official platform, along with my general wariness of politics, I'm hesitant to give an endorsement now.

• Against Tolerance - Islam, sexuality, and the politics of belonging in the Netherlands

  The right has used "tolerance" for LGBT folks as a weapon against Muslims not only in the Netherlands, but in England and other parts of Western Europe as well as in Canada. Similar discursive strategies are employed by the U.S. right, but they usually focus on perceived oppression of women rather than homosexuals-- which is all the more ironic when the same pundits who condemn abortion as "murder" turn around and start talking about how Muslims supposedly don't respect women's rights.

  "The Zanj rebels appealed to Islam, the common frame of reference of all social classes in the Abbasi empire. The Zanj were mindful that Islam had begun as a revolution of the dispossessed. The freed Syrian slave Zayd was the Prophet’s adopted son and military commander. The man the Prophet appointed to call the faithful to prayer, the first muezzin in Islam, was the freed Ethiopian slave Bilal. Although the Qur’an, like the earlier Abrahamic revelations, does not explicitly ban slavery, it repeatedly calls on believers to ‘emancipate slaves and feed orphans,’ and the position of slaves in Islam was theoretically closer to that of well-treated serfs than that of the chattel-slaves of the Americas. Islamic regulations stated clearly that a slave must be provided with food and clothing equal to his master’s. Slaves could marry and own property. The use of violence against a slave was firmly prohibited. As for racial bases for slavery, in his final sermon the Prophet stated that there is no difference between an Arab and a non-Arab or between a red man and a black man, except in God-consciousness. The Zanj revolutionaries saw these precepts betrayed by the merchants and land owners who had enslaved and abused them."

  "But the latest film directed by Rensil D'Silva, "Kurbaan," is anything but progressive. Being Muslim, I have always paid close attention to the Muslim stars in Indian cinema, namely Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan, and as a kid, it was nice to watch films where I knew the protagonists were played by Muslims, even though most of the time they're playing Hindu characters (which makes for another interesting discussion). "Kurbaan" is one of those rare movies where the Muslim actor, Saif Ali Khan, actually plays a Muslim. However, to my disappointment, the film is set in the backdrop of terrorism and loaded with Islamophobic stereotypes, something that is so typical in both Hollywood and Bollywood cinema whenever Muslims are portrayed."
