If you, too, are tired of Western academics, journalists, hippies, and expats penning neo-Orientalist cliches on their day trips to the Middle East, you'll love reading these parodies.
ei: Naseer Shamma and the music of resistance
"Iraq is widely viewed as the birthplace of the oud, an instrument that has traveled across countries and continents, a cultural fixture throughout the Middle East and into Asia. Celebrated songs on resistance to colonization and oppression in the region during the past century often have been popularized on the oud.
Take Lebanon's oud master Marcel Khalife, whose haunting melody on Palestinian exile, "Jawaz al-Safr" ("passport"), remains a popular poetic expression on Palestine. In Egypt, popular singer Sheikh Imam spoke out for Egypt's working poor and put oud music to the words of celebrated poet Ahmad Fouad Najm. It is upon this incredible history, interlacing the oud and popular resistance, that today Shamma builds upon.
Shamma's role as a socially conscious Arab artist stands in contrast to cookie-cutter pop singers common today in the Middle East. As sugar-coated melodies blare on TV screens at cafes across the region, music often marketed by Saudi-based music corporations, independent and politically-rooted artists such as Shamma play an important role in maintaining that critical connection between culture and political struggles for freedom in the region."Kurbaan: Stereotypes, Islamophobia, and the Sexy Terrorist « Muslim Reverie
"But the latest film directed by Rensil D'Silva, "Kurbaan," is anything but progressive. Being Muslim, I have always paid close attention to the Muslim stars in Indian cinema, namely Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan, and as a kid, it was nice to watch films where I knew the protagonists were played by Muslims, even though most of the time they're playing Hindu characters (which makes for another interesting discussion). "Kurbaan" is one of those rare movies where the Muslim actor, Saif Ali Khan, actually plays a Muslim. However, to my disappointment, the film is set in the backdrop of terrorism and loaded with Islamophobic stereotypes, something that is so typical in both Hollywood and Bollywood cinema whenever Muslims are portrayed."
These sanctions, like the deadly sanctions that killed over one million Iraqis (500,000 of which were children) only HURT the Iranian people. We must oppose them. Even the Iranian opposition ("Green movement") opposes U.S. sanctions!
