ei: Helen Thomas and the moral failure of US liberals
"The reasoning of one, Lanny Davis, counsel to the White House in the Clinton administration, was typical. Davis, who said he previously considered himself "a close friend," asked whether anyone would be "protective of Helen's privileges and honors if she had been asking Blacks to return to Africa, or Native Americans to Asia and South America, from which they came 8,000 or more years ago?"
It is that widely-accepted analogy, appropriating the black and Native American experience in a wholly misguided way, that reveals in stark fashion the moral failure of American liberals. In their blindness to the current relations of power in the US, most critics of Thomas contribute to the very intolerance they claim to be challenging."ei: The return of the colonial: Laor's "The Myths of Liberal Zionism" reviewed
"The soldier is also a figure out of the Aryan imagination. Hebrew literature of the 1940s to 1970s is replete with blue-eyed blondes, at a time when the Israeli Jewish demographic, Ashkenazi and Mizrahim, was hazel to obsidian. Laor is quite clear: this Jew doesn't exist. He is a stand-in for the real Jewry of Israel, the majority, Arabs, many of the Ashkenazi minority, descendants of refugees from the Shoah. This is particularly annoying for Zionist Arab Jews, who cannot relate to their past except as undispellable shame, as in the case of Israeli playwright and novelist A.B. Yehoshua, perpetually bummed at being a Sephardic Jew.
When oppression and dispossession map over ethnic lines, binding a community to a racially-conceived state requires racism, an abiding hatred of an "Other" -- in this case the Palestinian Arab. This becomes even more important when that Other is closer to the Sephardic Jewish population than to the dominant population, the Ashkenazi Jewish elite, the true beneficiary of Israeli racism. Israel is the second most unequal advanced industrial economy in the world, with 40 percent of its stock market owned by a handful of families, overwhelmingly Ashkenazi. Racism glues together a national identity in lieu of cultural or class-based links which could bind Jewish Arabs to Palestinian Arabs in different and dangerous communities of identity."Border Patrol Shooting: Mexico Condemns Killing Of Teen
Disgusting... first the Detroit cops murder a seven-year old black child in a raid, and now the US border thugs murder a 15-year old boy IN MEXICO PROPER...
YouTube - Mexican kindergarten kids vs racist white minutemen
In the face of the right-wing, racist attacks on Latinos, especially in the border states, these children keep the spirit of protest alive. It's bound to put a smile on your face. :)
Newly-released unedited video of the Israeli attack on the Mavi Marmara — War in Context
Unlike the fake, idiotic Hasbara videos of Flotilla passengers "attacking" the Israeli navy (obviously shot in someone's living room and digitally edited), here is UNRELEASED, UNEDITED footage recorded before and after the attack.
Talking about Israel with Eliot Spitzer on MSNBC - Glenn Greenwald - Salon.com
This isn't as recent as other postings (admittedly, we Brown Folks have lagged a bit on updating our Diigo links ever since we took them off of our main page...), but still a definite shocker for the MSM.

To be gay and racist is no anomaly | Jasbir Puar | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
Excellent article on the disingenuous co-optation of the LGBT liberation struggle by right-wing racists in Britain.
Middle East Report 255: BDS in the USA, 2001-2010 by Noura Erakat
Great piece on the last ten years of the global movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions from the murderous Israeli apartheid regime.
"As an African intellectual, I am insulted by what passes for knowledge about Africa. As a queer intellectual, I am disgusted by the nonsense that passes for truth about Africa. As a scholar and a thinker, I am disheartened that the work we African scholars and thinkers do is continually made invisible by "experts" like Bunting. "
Laws that need breaking | SocialistWorker.org
"In truth, Arizona's Black, Latino and Native American populations do not need ethnic studies to learn that they are oppressed by their own government. Arizona was steeped in the principles of white supremacy well before it became the nation's 48th state in 1912."
Palestinian minister: Boycott only against settlement products - Israel News, Ynetnews
DON'T buy into the Palestinian Collaborationist Authority's fake boycott campaign! Like every other rotten gov't in the Arab world, the PA has no problem maintaining business with a murdering, occupying force!
For a great analysis, read Ali Abunimah's piece, "The PA's disingenuous boycott campaign": http://electronicint...ifada.net/v2/article11286.shtmlWhy We Don't Need an Islamic Art Museum | Mostly Water
"As for those of us whose Muslim communities are on the other side of this celebratory moment - those whose mosques are vandalized, whose religious scholars are regularly interrogated by state officials, whose youth are infiltrated by informants, whose charities are barred from operating - we don't need a multi-million dollar museum. We need an end to Canadian support for war and occupation, an end to the policing of our communities, an end to surveillance and complicity in torture, an end to anti-Muslim legislation. And to Stephen Harper and the Aga Khan: we reject your glorification of a state that does not exist for our protection, and your pride in the close cooperation between your two institutions of power. The tradition of Islam is one of struggle, with submission only to God - and our struggles against what you represent are far too real to ever be placated by ancient artifacts."
