What the Muslim-American Establishment Fights For | Ikhras اخرس
All the right-wing and Zionist uproar over building a mosque at Ground Zero is racist. Plain and simple. But let's be fair: the Cordoba Initiative, the organization planning to build the mosque and an offshoot of the American Society for Muslim Advancement, is pretty lame in of itself. To give some context: a few years ago, ASMA awarded Irshad Manji a Muslim Leader of Tomorrow award. What's next, awards for Azar Nafisi, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Queen Rania, the Saudi dictatorship, and other gag-worthy personalities for their "leadership"? Red-carpet treatment for Obama, Bush, Tzipi Livni, Benjamin Netanyahu, and other criminals for their "tolerance" and "understanding"?
Sex, the City, and American Patriotism | Dissident Voice
Good and nuanced critique of Orientalism in the new Sex and the City movie -- not only is it the usual distortion of the so-called "East" by the West, but an Orientalism that is wholly endorsed by neoliberal Arab regimes.
Helen Thomas, Israel and the Palestinians - latimes.com
"If, however, it is unacceptable to say that Israeli Jews don't belong in Palestine, it is also unacceptable to say that the Palestinians don't belong on their own land.
Yet that is said all the time in the United States, without sparking the kind of moral outrage generated by Thomas' remark. And while the nation's editorialists worry about the offense she may have caused to Jews, no one seems particularly bothered by the offense felt every day by Palestinians when people — including those with far more power than Thomas — dismiss their rights, degrade their humanity and reject their claims to the most elementary forms of decency."UC Irvine’s Suspension of the Muslim Union | KABOBfest
I (Hoda) have mixed thoughts on this post... I do agree that the broader Palestine solidarity movement should be secular in organization, but there is nothing wrong with a Muslim students' group organizing an action for Palestine. Given the apolitical nature of most Muslim student organizations in North America (and also considering that the MSU-UCI is notorious for its orthodoxy), I welcome any and all political agitation. There is nothing tactically wrong with the MSU's method of protest-- don't Zionists heckle, launch an all-out PR war, threaten administrative action, and accuse student groups or academic centers of holding ties to "terrorists" whenever we bring pro-Palestine speakers to our campuses? If there's any beef I have with the MSU, it's that only their male members stood up to challenge the Israeli ambassador (watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcaryZbL3gE).
Lawmakers warn Turkey of payback over Iran, Israel policies - CNN.com
I don't deny the power of AIPAC in Washington, but I also don't buy the narrative that the US is an innocent player helplessly bullied by the Israeli lobby (as if we could ever absolve the US of its violent foreign policy around the world, no less in Palestine)... but I digress. Here is a fine example of the Israeli lobby's disingenuous manipulation tactics to further its own ends. If I were Armenian, I'd be insulted at the co-optation of a tragic moment in my history by a state founded on and sustained by ethnic cleansing.
